  3.     Hindsight is beautiful. In his article, Walter Shapiro
  4. implies that 20 years ago, in 1969, I should have been
  5. perceptive enough to know that Ferdinand Marcos did not have a
  6. "commitment to democracy" and that presumably I should not have
  7. worked for him in the last free and open democratic presidential
  8. election held in the Philippines (ESSAY, Sept. 4). The writer
  9. is correct when he says I refused to work for Marcos in 1986.
  10. I am sure he is not aware that on several earlier occasions I
  11. also rejected overtures to work for the Marcos government. I do
  12. wish I were blessed with the clairvoyance Shapiro suggests that
  13. all consultants should have, so that I could know what my
  14. candidates would do five or ten or 15 years after they were
  15. elected.
